چکیده
We report on a compact, ultrahigh-vacuum compatible optical assembly to create large-scale, two-dimensional lattices for use in experiments with ultracold atoms. The consists of an octagon-shaped spacer made from ultra-low-expansion glass, which we optically contact four fused silica cavity mirrors, making it highly mechanically and thermally stable. mirror surfaces are nearly plane-parallel, allows us two perpendicular modes diameters . Such large mode desirable increase the lattice homogeneity, but lead strong angular sensitivities coplanarity between modes. demonstrate procedure precisely position each substrate that achieves deviation Creating at arbitrary visible near-infrared wavelengths requires significant power enhancements overcome limitations available laser power. mirrors have customized low-loss coating enhances set relevant by up 3 orders magnitude..

Large-mode enhancement cavities.
In passive enhancement cavities the achievable power level is limited by mirror damage. Here, we address the design of robust optical resonators with large spot sizes on all mirrors, a measure that promises to mitigate this limitation by decreasing both the intensity and the thermal gradient on the mirror surfaces. We introduce a misalignment sensitivity metric to evaluate the robustness of res...
متن کاملControlling mode locking in optical ring cavities
Imperfections in the surface of intracavity elements of an optical ring resonator can scatter light from one mode into the counterpropagating mode. The phase-locking of the cavity modes induced by this backscat-tering is a well-known example that notoriously afflicts laser gyroscopes and similar active systems. We experimentally show how backscattering can be circumvented in a unidirectionally ...
متن کاملGeneralized effective mode volume for leaky optical cavities.
We show explicitly how the commonly adopted prescription for calculating effective mode volumes is wrong and leads to uncontrolled errors. Instead, we introduce a generalized mode volume that can be easily evaluated based on the mode calculation methods typically applied in the literature, and which allows one to compute the Purcell effect and other interesting optical phenomena in a rigorous a...
متن کاملAnalysis of optical defect cavities in 1D grating structures with quasi-normal mode theory
Subject of our investigation are resonance phenomena in optical cavities realized as defects in 1D gratings with piecewise constant refractive index distributions. Upon viewing the cavity as a passive open system with intrinsically leaky behavior due to the open boundaries where waves are permitted to leave the structure, the cavity can be characterized in terms of complex frequencies associate...
متن کاملDiscrete-mode cancellation mechanism for high-Q integrated optical cavities with small modal volume.
A mechanism to reduce radiation loss from integrated optical cavities without a complete photonic bandgap is introduced and demonstrated. It is applicable to any device with a patterned substrate (including both low and high index-contrast systems), when it supports discrete guided or leaky modes through which power escaping the cavity can be channeled into radiation. One then achieves the asso...
